How Volumetric Weight Works in India
Understand dimensional weight, chargeable weight, and why couriers bill more than your actual package weight.

Indian couriers charge on chargeable weight — the higher of actual weight or volumetric (dimensional) weight.
The formula
For kg and cm measurements:
Volumetric weight (kg) = Length × Width × Height ÷ 5000
Chargeable weight = max(Actual weight, Volumetric weight)
Example
A shoe box weighing 800g (0.8 kg) with dimensions 40 × 30 × 15 cm:
- Volumetric = 40 × 30 × 15 ÷ 5000 = 3.6 kg
- Chargeable = 3.6 kg (not 0.8 kg)
You pay freight for 3.6 kg. This is the #1 source of billing disputes for new sellers.
How to reduce volumetric charges
- Use right-sized packaging — avoid large boxes for small items
- Compress soft goods where possible
- Compare surface vs air — some carriers apply different divisors
- Photograph dimensions at dispatch for dispute evidence
